Nobody would have believed a child could swim that far.

Kailo had been swimming since about eleven months of age. That was before he was walking. Or talking. He just loved the water. And the water seemed to love him back. He floated. He didn’t go pruney. He’d never been dumped by the surf that pounded the beaches and headlands of their island. But even still, it was an anxious group that gathered on the jetty on February 12th. It was Kailo’s fifth birthday and the day his grandparents had finally been worn down by his pleas and let him “swim over” for the afternoon. 2kms. Open ocean. He was five! But the grinning child marching up the sand looked ready to turn straight back around and do it all over again!
